36h Saint Eustache

"To move the pools, sometimes it is not enough. A solid groovy bass line, a metronomic rhythm, and intoxicating melodies are enough to activate everything. The duo Klaus Johann Grobe understood this well, and, since 2014, has been constantly improving the recipe for their krautpop, formidable in effectiveness.

In the Saint-Eustache church, the duo's heady melodies and their dreamy hypnotic synth loops plunge the audience into a sweet trance. We can't help but start to go from one foot to the other on their tube Ja!, Which reminds us of the great hours of Metronomy. Under warm lighting, the church vibrates throughout the evening, responding to the song of the Swiss-German group. Concert captured in June 2019 at the 36h Saint-Eustache festival in Paris."

SPORTS--Baseball--SABR Biography and Games Project Updates--June 5-11, 2020

June 9: On June 9, 2020, The Society of American Baseball Research (SABR) biography project added 4 biographies and 4 games to the games project. There are now 5,215 biographies (Players, Ballparks, Broadcasters, Executives, Games, Managers, Scouts, Spouses, Umpires, and people who were Famous Outside Baseball).

June 9: Robin Yount (Hall of Fame): Shortstop, Center Fielder, Brewers (1974-1993). 3,142 hits.

June 9: Roy Crabb: Pitcher, White Sox, Athletics (1912)

June 9: Red Nelson: Pitcher, Browns, Phillies, Reds (1910-1913). Pitcher in the first game of doubleheader against Cleveland at the end of the 1910 season. Nap Lajoie famously got 8 hits in doubleheader to edge out Ty Cobb (who sat out
the last two games) for the batting title. It was suggested that the Browns allowed Lajoie's hits because of an intense dislike of Cobb, shared by every other American League team, as well of many of his Tiger teammates. Nelson tells a different story.

June 9: Cal Hogue: Pitcher, Pirates (1952-1954). Pitched for two of the worst teams of all time, that lost 216 games in 1952-53. Joe Garagiola was also on that team.

CULTURE--TV--Television Academy Oral Interviews--May 29-June 4, 2020

June 1: Remembering Herbert Stempel (famous Quiz Show Contestant)

We're sad to learn that famed quiz show contestant, Herbert Stempel, passed away on April 7, 2020 at the age of 93. Stempel rose to prominence in the 1950s as a contestant on the quiz show Twenty-One. According to Stempel, producer Dan Enright choreographed the quiz show experience by crafting Stempel's "nerdy" persona and his look, and by secretly providing Stempel with the answers to specific quiz questions. Stempel stated that he was promised a job on the show and other benefits to purposely lose to contestant Charles Van Doren, and when those promises were not kept, he approached the authorities and helped ignite what became known as the Quiz Show Scandals. Ultimately, Stempel returned to private life, working for the New York transportation system.

June 1: You better BEE-lieve it: Sam Bee on The Daily Show, launching Full Frontal, and more (interview with links to full oral interview).

We were very excited to sit down with host/comedian Samantha Bee in New York City in October, 2019. American audiences likely first met Bee as a correspondent on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart when she joined the cast in 2003 and made an indelible mark, whether it was interviewing gay penguins or a self-coined "homonausic" candidate for Congress. After leaving the show in 2015, she developed Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, a weekly comedy show with a unique, biting perspective that only Bee can deliver. You can watch her full two-hour interview here.

We also reached out to Bee in May, 2020, to get an update on how she has been coping during the COVID-19 pandemic. She is still shooting her show weekly, from her backyard:
