SPORTS--Baseball--SABR Biography and Games Project Updates--June 5-11, 2020

June 9: On June 9, 2020, The Society of American Baseball Research (SABR) biography project added 4 biographies and 4 games to the games project. There are now 5,215 biographies (Players, Ballparks, Broadcasters, Executives, Games, Managers, Scouts, Spouses, Umpires, and people who were Famous Outside Baseball).

June 9: Robin Yount (Hall of Fame): Shortstop, Center Fielder, Brewers (1974-1993). 3,142 hits.

June 9: Roy Crabb: Pitcher, White Sox, Athletics (1912)

June 9: Red Nelson: Pitcher, Browns, Phillies, Reds (1910-1913). Pitcher in the first game of doubleheader against Cleveland at the end of the 1910 season. Nap Lajoie famously got 8 hits in doubleheader to edge out Ty Cobb (who sat out

the last two games) for the batting title. It was suggested that the Browns allowed Lajoie's hits because of an intense dislike of Cobb, shared by every other American League team, as well of many of his Tiger teammates. Nelson tells a different story. 

June 9: Cal Hogue: Pitcher, Pirates (1952-1954). Pitched for two of the worst teams of all time, that lost 216 games in 1952-53. Joe Garagiola was also on that team.

1. Hawai'i

May 20: NMAI has recently added a Playlist on Hawaiian Music Highlights.

Kūpaoa Perform "Kaha‘ealeiakalewa"

Kūpaoa is an award-winning husband and wife musical duo. The lovely voices of Līhau Hannahs Paik and Kellen Paik have delighted listeners and audiences for almost a decade, starting out as musicians who shared stages with friends and each other, and then joining seven years ago as the duo Kupaoa, which has since become a solid institution in the field of Hawaiian music. Here they perform "Waimanu I Ka Lauoha" as Nā Lei Hulu I Ka Wēkiu dance.

Nā Lei Hulu I Ka Wēkiu, founded by Hula master Patrick Makuakane, who is well known for his innovative choreography. His work is grounded in the traditions of hula, yet he is has also developed a unique style, called hula mua, that uses modern music to provide a whole new dimension to the dance.

By the year 1916 Hawaiian Music was outselling everything else in the mainland. Even jazz great Louis Armstrong  recorded a Hawaiian album called "Jazz Goes Hawaiian."  In the  twenties, thirties, and forties, Hawaiian musicians were experimenting with a new kind of musical genre, everything from jazz, pop, and the big band sound. Here Nā Lei Hulu I Ka Wēkiu dances to Louis Armstrong and His Orchestra's version of "Hawaiian Hospitality" and  "If I Could Be With You."

Amy Hānaiali'i' Gilliom sings "Hanaiali'i Nu La Ea"

Amy Hānaiali'i' Gilliom is Hawai'i's top female recording artist. Her music is an exceptional blend of classical training, modern musical influences, and cultural heri¬tage. She received four Grammy nominations for Best Hawaiian Music Album, and fifteen Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards (Hawai'i's equivalent to the Grammy). Hānaiali'i's second album, Hawaiian Tradition, placed her on the Billboard World Album charts, a first for an album written solely in the Hawaiian language. Hānaiali'i' is officially Hawai'i's music ambassador. In this video, she sings "Hanaiali'i Nu La Ea."

2. Peru

May 20: Kaypi Perú: This Is Peru - 2 Raices y Expresiones

Raices y Expresiones cultivates the learning process of dances from the mountains and forest of Peru. Their main performance is called Inti Raymi, a very famous ritual from the Andes.

May 20: Kaypi Perú: This Is Peru - 4 Adu Group Project

A Peruvian artistic company based in Lima Peru composed by 15 members. Adu Group uses elements of Peruvian culture and folklore in order to adapt it to a contemporary context. Art Director: Antonio Vilchez.
